Listening Therapy:

Safe & Sound Protocol

& Rest & Restore

I curate listening therapies to the needs of my clients using Safe & Sound &/or Rest & Restore Protocols.

Listening therapies need to be adjusted as we go, so an attitude of openness & curiosity is essential.

dates for 2026 are May 26 through August 21st for 12 weeks of access to complete the program…

Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) helps with many sensory arousal issues. I offer SSP to help clients who especially struggle to feel safe in their body & experience auditory over-arousal:

  • Feeling easily irritated by sounds that others don't seem to mind or even notice

  • Difficulty editing out background noise either at home or in public places

  • Light or alert sleep, sounds cause interruption in sleep regularly or difficulty reaching deep sleep/restful sleep

  • Incidence of an accident or traumatic event & haven't been able to feel a sense of safety since the event happened

SSP also helps with social/relational challenges, Long-Covid symptoms, & overall building safety & moving you into the relational part of your nervous system.

SSP impacts people in all different ways, so it's difficult to name all the things you may experience or list all possibilities here. Generally, in session you may feel tired, agitated, tense, etc. Sometimes these impacts may only be noticeable the day after listening.

Rest & Restore Protocol (RRP) was created to help with:

  • Stress & anxiety

  • Fatigue & sleep issues

  • GI challenges & digestive issues

I primarily offer RRP to help clients who struggle with feeling rested & other sleep issues. The RRP can help invite your nervous system into the “rest/digest” part of your nervous system.

RRP impacts people in all different ways, so it's difficult to name all the things you may experience or list all possibilities here. Generally, you may feel an increase in anxiousness, tiredness & tension before benefitting from relaxation, improved sleep, etc. Some impacts may be immediately felt & some may only be noticeable the day after listening.

TO BE CLEAR…

  • THE SAFE & SOUND & REST & RESTORE PROTOCOL ARE NOT STAND-ALONE THERAPIES.

  • THEY ARE A COMPLIMENT TO OTHER THERAPIES.

 FAQs

  • These kinds of listening therapies can address MANY issues.

My primary specialty for offering these therapies is to address auditory sensitivities. I enjoy helping highly-sensitive people reduce sound-sensitivity & reduce anxiety related to sound.

  • It’s a good idea to contact me 2-3 weeks before the start date. Like with al of my services, you will need to make a first appointment to see if we are a good fit & also to lay-out a plan for therapy.

In addition to that, we must assess if listening therapies are appropriate for your needs.

  • It will depend on what you want to work on if we choose one or the other or if we do some work with both.

Another consideration is if you’ve already completed Safe & Sound in the past & are seeking to come back to it.

  • It is not. These programs are based on the work of Dr. Stephen Porges, author of Polyvagal Theory & subsequent research & development of Auditory Treatments for Autism, ADHD, PTSD, etc.

SSP has different playlists to choose from. Some are music you will be familiar with & some are original music compositions. The music is “treated” to move the muscles of the inner ear, so the sounds & tones go up & down.

RRP is original music that repeats throughout the program & while melodic, it’s not like listening to songs. The music is also treated to stimulate the dorsal vagal nervous system.

  • Safe & Sound Playlists

Rest & Restore is original music & is the same for each level (it’s more sound than “songs”)

  • It really depends on the goals you are trying to achieve, but for SSP it usually involves listening with over the ear headphones & processing what comes up in your sensation & emotion.

  • I only offer SSP & RRP for a limited time each year (in the Summer).

When we meet to assess if listening therapy is a good fit, we’ll talk about if this amount of time will be too short for your needs.

12 weeks is usually enough time to complete SSP, but we will not know what works for your nervous system until we begin.

I want to be transparent that it’s not a good fit for everyone & that a little can sometimes go a long way.

  • Listening therapy is a specialty I like to give my full attention to, so I prefer to consolidate when I have clients working through listening programs.

It also helps me keep pricing lower as SSP & RRP are subscription-based for providers.

  • Yes, it is an option to add listening therapy to sessions when you are coming for regular psychotherapy.

  • Yes, but I do recommend you have some kind of other psychotherapy or healing modality in place to help process what these therapies bring up.

  • There is a flat fee of $600 for 3 month access to the program.

Session fees are the same for listening sessions as my other sessions & based on session length.

Depending on what you are trying to achieve, we will establish if you will be doing at-home listening or in-office (or a combo).

  • If you do any at-home listening of SSP you will need over-the-ear headphones & a smartphone or tablet to download the app.

For RRP you will need the app also, but you can use headphones, ear buds or a speaker.

If you do all of your listening in-office, I provide everything unless you prefer to use your own.

  • I consider offering SSP online on a case-by-case basis.

It’s not always a good fit, so I take careful consideration if it’s going to be workable.
